Your Guide to What's Happening in AI and Why It Matters to You
Wednesday, October 28, 2026

By next spring, the phone call from your bank, the photo frame on Grandma's shelf and the chatbot answering your customers will all have AI in them, and so will the people trying to rob you. This Wednesday, Google gave its AI worlds voices, a UK web registrar blamed an AI-driven attack for leaking customer data, and two startups raised a combined $84 million to sort real customers from fakes. The building got bigger today, and so did the guard budget.
Today in AI:
- The Sims Called, It Wants Its Job Back - Google DeepMind introduced Genie 4, a world model that turns text prompts into explorable scenes with their own soundtrack and characters you can actually talk to. It launches to trusted testers first, with AI Ultra subscribers and Gemini API partners next in line. Cloud Google
- Your Domain Registrar Got Robo-Burgled - UK registrar 123 Reg says a September 18 intrusion it calls 'AI-driven' exposed customer names, phone numbers, VAT numbers and product details. Investigators found copies of Anthropic's open-source attack 'skills' on servers in China and suspect a state-backed group. Cloud Google
- Banks Get a Lie Detector for Chargebacks - Casap raised a $56 million Series B to help banks fight customers who falsely dispute their own purchases, now nearly a third of card fraud. AI tools that write slick dispute letters made the problem worse, so Casap answers with AI. Fortune, Oct 28, 2026
- Please Pick Up, It's Really Your Hospital - Numeracle raised $28 million to keep legitimate business calls from getting slapped with spam warnings. It verifies which company owns which number and plans to extend that ID check to chat apps, marketplaces and AI agents. news.crunchbase.com
- Alexa Moves Into the Mantelpiece - Amazon launched a $200 Alexa Photo Frame that picks your best shots, skips screenshots and receipts, and lets family add pictures directly. It arrived alongside a refreshed Echo Dot and an Echo Studio with a built-in camera. Engadget, Oct 28, 2026
- David Finally Gets a Slingshot - Legal startup Eve builds an AI case platform for small plaintiff firms that work on contingency. Cases on the platform passed 350,000 across nearly 2,000 firms, and closed cases have produced more than $3.5 billion in settlements. Casefox
- Google Rents Out Its Secret Chips - Oracle will offer Google's custom TPU chips, the first time customers can use them outside Google's own data centers. Translation: Google wants a bigger slice of the AI chip market Nvidia has owned. cnbc.com
- Getting Cited by ChatGPT Is Now a PR Job - A Muck Rack and Generative Pulse report found that which sources AI tools cite depends heavily on the question asked and the platform used. PR teams chasing 'GEO,' short for showing up in AI answers, have to start from customer questions. Meltwater

Today's Takeaway:
123 Reg found copies of Anthropic's open-source attack skills sitting on Chinese servers, which means the toolkit behind its breach was free to download. On the same day, Casap and Numeracle raised money for the opposite job: proving who is real. Casap checks whether a cardholder's dispute is honest, per Fortune, Oct 28, 2026, and Numeracle checks whether a caller is really your bank, per news.crunchbase.com.
Faking a person, a letter or an attack got cheap, so verification is where the money now flows. For a small business, that means your legitimate calls and refund requests will face more suspicion, and you'll pay a vendor to vouch for you. Open-sourcing attack skills did defenders less good than it did attackers, and Anthropic should rethink what it publishes.
🔧 Tool Spotlight

- Runway - AI video generation and editing - turn photos into clips, expand canvases, swap backgrounds.
What it does: Runway is the consumer-friendly version of pro AI video. Upload a photo and get a 5-second animated clip. Remove video backgrounds. Expand a vertical video to widescreen. Generate b-roll from text.
Who it's for: Content creators, marketers making short-form video, anyone curious about AI video without learning Premiere.
Try this first: Go to runwayml.com, sign in, and try "Image to Video" - upload any photo and see it animate for 5 seconds. The result is uncanny.
Free or paid: Free tier gives 125 credits (enough for a few short videos). Paid plans start at $15/mo.

The Bottom Line
The Pattern: Two weeks ago, Blue Planet's creators had to prove their footage was real; today banks, hospitals and callers face the same test, and identity checks have become a subscription you buy, like insurance.
Our Call: At least one major US carrier or bank will announce a verified-caller or verified-agent partnership with a startup like Numeracle by January 31, 2027. More likely than not. We'll grade this one in a Friday digest.
Your Move: Ten minutes today: call your own business number from a personal phone and see whether it shows a spam warning. If it does, ask your phone carrier in writing how to register your number as verified.
