Your Guide to What's Happening in AI and Why It Matters to You
Sunday, October 11, 2026

You probably think of AI as a chatbot you open when you feel like it. A federal lawsuit now alleges McDonald's uses an AI pricing engine to set what you pay for fries, and Booz Allen just watched AI agents break into industrial controls in about the time it takes to finish those fries. Today's issue covers who's watching these systems, who isn't, and what that means for your wallet and your business.
Today in AI:
- Your Big Mac Has a Pricing Algorithm, Allegedly - A federal antitrust lawsuit claims McDonald's uses an AI pricing engine to overcharge customers for Big Macs and fries, and McDonald's denies targeting individual shoppers. Meanwhile, digital shelf labels are spreading at Kroger, Walmart and Whole Foods, which makes price changes as easy as a software update. cnbc.com, Oct 11, 2026
- Robot Arm Hijacked in Minutes - Booz Allen tested two unnamed frontier models against a mock industrial network, and the models completed all eight attack scenarios, moving from perimeter breach to control-network actions in just over 16 minutes. Companies that skipped basic security on their operational systems are the first ones exposed. Cloud Google
- Nadella Wants a Big Red Button - Microsoft's CEO called for advanced AI to ship with containment, independent controls and an emergency brake that lets authorized people stop a model mid-task. He also wants every model treated like a potential insider threat, with an audit trail humans can read. Blogs Microsoft
- The Referees Finally Get Noticed - Small nonprofit evaluators like METR, Apollo Research and Transluce are now expected to keep frontier labs honest, after Anthropic pledged to embed them and the White House cheered. Nobody has settled who pays them or how much access they get, and that gap matters. Safe
- HPE Says Your Network Admin Is Optional - HPE networking chief Rami Rahim says 70 to 80 percent of trouble tickets already need no human, and he expects zero within two to three years. His plan for broken hardware is to have an intern plug in the replacement part. Packetpushers
- DistroKid's AI Purge Hits Real Musicians - DistroKid confirmed it's removing songs in response to UMG's lawsuit over an alleged AI-slop pipeline. Human artists say their tracks vanished without notice, which shows what happens when automated cleanup has no appeals desk. theverge.com, Oct 10, 2026
- RAMgeddon Reaches Your Laptop - Engadget compared MacBook Pro prices from 2021 and today and found that AI data centers soaking up memory and storage pushed Apple into broad price hikes. Budget for your next hardware refresh using this year's prices, not the ones you remember. Macos-tahoe
- Amazon Finally Builds a Real iPad Rival - Amazon's new Alexa Tablets drop Fire OS for near-stock Android with the Play Store, starting at $229. The 11-inch model undercuts the budget iPad with more RAM and a better display, which makes it a useful option for cheap team devices. 9to5mac.com

Today's Takeaway:
Booz Allen's agents completed every attack scenario they tried, the same week Satya Nadella asked for an emergency brake on AI (Blogs Microsoft). Neither one says who pulls that brake. The answer so far is a handful of underfunded nonprofits that labs invite in and also pay (Safe). If you run a factory, a warehouse or a clinic with networked equipment, your protection right now rests on vendor goodwill and whatever basic security you set up yourself.
"An emergency brake is only useful if someone is still in the driver's seat when it's time to pull it."
HPE's promise of zero-human trouble tickets (Packetpushers) makes the speed problem worse, because the attacker and the fixer would both be machines and the person who could tell them apart has moved on. Pulling humans out of network operations before an independent brake exists is the riskiest cost-cutting move on any IT roadmap this year.
🔧 Tool Spotlight

- Photoroom - AI photo editor for backgrounds, products, and instant retouches.
What it does: Drop in any photo, get a background-removed PNG in 2 seconds. Replace backgrounds with AI-generated scenes, batch-edit product shots, retouch portraits, or generate marketing-ready images from rough phone photos.
Who it's for: E-commerce sellers (Shopify, Etsy, eBay), real estate agents, anyone selling stuff online, content creators needing clean product shots.
Try this first: Go to photoroom.com, upload a product photo from your phone, and pick a background style. You'll have a marketplace-ready listing image in under a minute.
Free or paid: Free tier with watermarks. Pro at $9.99/mo unlocks no-watermark, batch editing, and higher resolution.

The Bottom Line
The Pattern: McDonald's fries, DistroKid takedowns and HPE ticket queues all show automated decisions reaching ordinary people with no human checkpoint, and October is the first month CEOs started asking for one in public. Oversight has turned into a staffing question, and most companies are cutting that headcount.
The Other Read: Booz Allen sells cybersecurity services, and its lab was built to mimic systems that lacked basic defenses, so the results partly advertise its own services. We still take it seriously, because those weak systems describe much of the real world.
Your Move: This Sunday, take fifteen minutes to list every networked machine in your business that can physically move, heat or lock something, and name the person who can unplug each one.
