Your Guide to What's Happening in AI and Why It Matters to You
Wednesday, September 23, 2026

Three things landed before lunch today: Spotify handed US listeners the steering wheel to its recommendation algorithm, Ema raised $77 million to replace the software your HR team hates, and McKinsey explained why your AI bill keeps climbing even as models get cheaper. Meta's new Muse assistant, meanwhile, shipped with a zero-day that lets any app on your Mac hijack it. Fast week. Let's unpack it.
Today in AI:
- Spotify Hands You the Algorithm Keys - Spotify started rolling out "Taste Profile" to US Premium subscribers on Wednesday, letting you see and edit how it understands your music taste using plain-language commands. Finally, a way to tell it your kid's car playlist isn't your personality. TechCrunch, Sep 23, 2026
- Meta's Muse Assistant Has a Hole You Can Drive Through - A zero-day in Meta's new Muse assistant lets any locally installed app or terminal command grab the token authenticating you to your account. Amazon started blocking Muse from its site on Sunday, which tells you something. Ai Meta
- Cheaper Models, Fatter Invoices - McKinsey partners explained the paradox on Tuesday: per-unit intelligence costs are collapsing, but agentic AI consumption is exploding. The same task can cost up to 30 times more from one run to the next, depending on the path the agent takes. Fortune, Sep 23, 2026
- Ema Raises $77M to Eat Your SaaS Stack - The AI agent startup quadrupled its valuation with a Series B led by Creaegis, bringing total funding to $140 million. Founder Surojit Chatterjee says customers are already replacing large SaaS apps that have "mostly become like a database." TechCrunch, Sep 23, 2026
- Apple Intelligence Is Squatting on Your Hard Drive - macOS 27 automatically downloads its AI model with no opt-out, and users report it consuming far more than Apple's stated maximums. One Reddit user clocked 30.16GB; MacRumors saw 20.67GB on an M4 Pro Mac mini. Apple
- Americans Use AI, Distrust AI, Repeat - A new Gallup and Microsoft survey across 37 countries found most global users feel positive about AI's future. The US is one of the few countries where negative emotions outweigh positive ones - and we keep using it daily anyway. 404media, Sep 23, 2026
- Your Next Performance Review May Not Have a Human Author - Fuse founder Alan Chang argues AI-led performance reviews are coming and "you cannot hide from AI." The pitch is objectivity; the risk is a manager outsourcing judgment to a system that only sees what's logged. Sifted Eu, Sep 23, 2026
- A Prime Minister Admits He's Behind - Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis told roughly 250 founders in San Francisco on Monday that he doesn't have answers to the AI questions other leaders debate privately. "We're already fighting yesterday's battle," he said. Refreshing candor from a head of state. TechCrunch
- Dropbox Says the Bottleneck Moved - Dropbox's CTO and engineering productivity lead published lessons from company-wide AI deployment: more output creates new bottlenecks downstream, and human judgment gets more important, not less. Volume isn't the same thing as value. Atlassian

Today's Takeaway:
McKinsey's Lari Hämäläinen described agent runs whose cost varies wildly for identical tasks, and Apple shipped a model to your Mac that you can't decline. Both stories share a mechanic: the AI decides how much of your resource to consume, and you find out afterward. Spotify's Taste Profile is the interesting counterexample - it's the rare feature that hands control back, letting you edit what the algorithm believes about you in plain English (TechCrunch). That asymmetry explains the Gallup finding better than any culture-war theory does: Americans distrust AI because most of the AI they touch is unilateral (404media). Ema's pitch to replace your SaaS stack runs straight into this - you can't budget for a tool whose per-task cost swings 30x (Fortune).
"Americans don't distrust AI because it's smart. They distrust it because it spends their storage, money, and attention without asking."

The Bottom Line
The Pattern: Storage, compute spend, and your Mac's permission dialogs used to be things you approved one at a time. This week three companies - Apple, Meta, and every agent vendor McKinsey studied - made consumption automatic and disclosure optional. That's a default-settings problem, owned by whoever installs your updates, not a model-quality problem.
Our Call: By December 15, at least one major AI vendor will ship per-run cost caps or spend alerts as a headline feature, not a buried admin setting. More likely than not, given how fast CFOs are noticing variable agent bills. We'll grade this one in a Friday digest.
Your Move: Five minutes today: open System Settings on your Mac, go to Storage, and write down what Apple Intelligence actually claimed versus Apple's published maximum. That gap is your baseline for every "up to" number a vendor gives you next quarter.
📝 Trivia Answers: 1) b - The trend of 'Jumbo-Sized Series A Rounds' indicates a significant increase in early-stage funding, with at least 114 startups raising $100M+. | 2) b - Spotify's 'Taste Profile' allows users to shape the AI-driven recommendations delivered to their app's Home feed. | 3) b - The Georgetown-IBM experiment in 1954 was a pioneering demonstration of machine translation, a significant early achievement in AI.
