Amazon's Mechanical Turk closing on September 30 and Runable hitting $2M ARR in three weeks frame the same shift from opposite ends. MTurk was built on the premise that humans would do the small tasks machines couldn't -- labeling images, transcribing audio, answering surveys. Those workers trained the models that now make MTurk obsolete, as CNBC reported.
Runable's bet, per TechCrunch, is that the agents trained on that labor can now run entire marketing operations. The uncomfortable part: there's no clean pipeline from displaced MTurk workers to the jobs these new tools create. The demand is for people who can direct AI agents, not perform the micro-tasks that built them.
If you run a small business tempted by a $99/month AI marketing agent, the ROI might be real -- but the workforce transition behind it is anything but smooth. Calling that transition inevitable feels premature when we haven't even tried to manage it.
