Everyone tells you AI adoption is about buying the right tools. Cloudflare's CIO just admitted his own sales team built a rogue "SuperApp" demanding admin access to a dozen production systems -- and that's actually the success story. Meanwhile, SpaceX's first earnings report revealed $18.3 billion in spending (six times last year), a Japanese throat-scanning AI is replacing the dreaded nasal swab at 2,000 clinics, and the gap between "using AI" and "building with AI" turns out to be the metric nobody's tracking but everyone should be.

Today in AI:

Today's Takeaway:

Cloudflare's CIO caught an employee requesting admin keys to a dozen production systems for a homemade AI "SuperApp" -- and instead of shutting it down, built an entire internal platform to channel that energy safely (Cloudflare). That anecdote maps directly onto the builder activation gap described in Ienable: most organizations track AI adoption by counting users, but the real productivity split is between people who chat with AI and people who wire it into repeatable workflows. Cloudflare's response -- build guardrails fast enough that builders don't route around IT -- is the playbook that matters now. The uncomfortable implication: companies that only measure "how many employees touched an AI tool" are tracking the wrong metric. If your org can't tell you how many reusable AI workflows exist inside it today, you're measuring attendance, not output.

"Counting AI users is like counting gym memberships -- it tells you nothing about who's actually lifting."

🏆 5-Minute AI Challenge

Snap Your Space, Style It with AI

The challenge: Take a photo of any room in your home and use an AI image tool to instantly redecorate it in a style you've always wanted - no designer required.

Step by step:

  1. Grab your phone and snap a photo of any room in your home (bedroom, living room, home office - whatever needs a refresh).
  2. Open your favorite AI image tool that accepts photo uploads (many free options exist - look for an 'upload image' or 'edit photo' option).
  3. Upload your photo and type a prompt like: 'Redecorate this room in a modern Scandinavian style with warm lighting and natural wood furniture.'
  4. Generate 2-3 variations by tweaking your prompt - try 'cozy minimalist,' 'mid-century modern,' or 'bright bohemian' to see different looks.
  5. Screenshot your favorite result and save it as your renovation mood board - or share it with a partner to finally settle that design debate.

Why this matters: As AI tools grow more embedded in everyday life - from meeting notetakers to medical devices - learning to use multimodal AI (tools that see, not just read) puts you ahead of the curve before these skills become table stakes.

The Bottom Line

The Pattern: The AI adoption conversation has quietly shifted from "are people using it" to "are people building durable things with it" -- and most organizations haven't updated their dashboards to match. This is a different problem than access, cost, or safety; it's a measurement failure at the management layer.

Our Call: By October 1, 2026, at least two major enterprise software vendors (think Salesforce, ServiceNow, or Microsoft) will ship a "builder activation" metric -- a dashboard feature that distinguishes one-shot AI queries from saved, reusable workflows. More likely than not. We'll grade this one in a Friday digest.

Your Move: Read Cloudflare's OS blog post at blog.cloudflare.com/how-we-use-ai-with-cloudflare-os -- takes five minutes. Then ask your IT lead one question: how many reusable AI workflows exist inside our org right now? If nobody can answer, that's your Thursday morning agenda item.
